ITCS Memo # 2295

A test tow of 9 loaded barges with 9' 6" draft grounded at mile 974.5 this afternoon. The tow has been re-floated but the channel has not been re-buoyed due to the grounding. A strong draft exists on the red buoys. Industry will sound the river at Mound City at daylight on Saturday morning.
Once the river has been checked industry reps will meet with the Coast Guard to determine whether the river can be opened to traffic. Dam 53 put up more dam this afternoon and the lower gauge stands at 9.8. Cairo gauge is at 8.83 at 1700 hrs.
The Safety Zone remains in effect at Mound City and no traffic may pass without permission from MSU Paducah. An update will be published on Saturday morning as soon as new information becomes available.
