ITCS Memo # 2642

Extensive damage occurred to Miter Gate #2 (Upper Landwall) on 27 March 2004 at Lock 17, UMR Mile 437.1. The #2 Miter Gate was hit again on 6 April 2005 and 28 March 2008. All towboats are advised to have their tows completely flat on the upper guide wall before the head of the tow reaches the upper miter gates. This should help in eliminating or lessening any impact that might occur on the #2 Miter gate. Any further contact to the #2 Miter Gate has the potential to do extreme damage and close Lock 17.
