The Waterways Association of Pittsburgh is the oldest waterways organiation in the country. It was organized in 1859 by river and coal interests in the Pittsburgh district and charted by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1870. The name was changed in 1967 to indicate it's broader mission and membership.
The goals and objectives of the organization have remained the same since its founding: "To be actively engaged in the study and promotion of waterway development for improved and safe navigation, for flood control, water conservation and low flow augmentation to the benefit of the public, indsutry and navigation interests". Since the late 1960's it has been the voice of the local waterways industry in Washington, Harrisburg and with local governments.
It is the only group in the Pittsburgh District concerned with the daily problems araising on the river which affect navigation and the local waterways companies. Its membership is made up of the carriers and shippers who handled about 90% of the cargo moving on the three rivers here plus firms who serve the industry as suppliers or shippers.
